Acromegaly: What is it?

Acromegaly: What is it?

Acromegaly is a medical condition caused by hormonal imbalance.

Growth hormone will be overproduced in this condition.

This will lead to gigantism in case the disorder starts in puberty stage.

In many cases, this condition is caused by benign tumor of pituitary gland which is present in the brain.

Excess production of growth hormone by this increased-sized tumor will result in extra growth of limbs and organs.

While the tumor grows in size, it creates pressures on the brain tissues present around it.

In most of the cases, acromegaly is reported to be spontaneous and not genetically inherited.

In few cases, this condition might be caused due to tumor in any part of the body, like pancreas, lungs, adrenal glands or any other part.
