Listeriosis

Listeriosis
It is a bacterial disease caused by the bacteria named as Listeria monocytogenes. It usually infects the CNS causing brain abscess, meningitis, cerebritis, meningo – encephalitis and can also occur as bactereamia in immuno-compromised patients, pregnant ladies, infants and old people.

SYMPTOMS:
The disease causes fever, malaise, muscle ache, diarrhoea, stiff neck, convulsion, flu-like illness, miscarriage, still birth, confusion, early delivery, head ache and loss of balance.
DIAGNOSIS:
Blood and CSF cultures are carried on.
TREATMENT:

Usually ampicillin is given. Gentamicin can also be used.
